Advance directives

The first step in estate planning is to make certain you have a way to communicate your intentions to your family in the event you become incapacitated.

Durable power of attorney for healthcare/patient advocate designate. You can designate another person to be your representative and make your medical decisions for you.

General durable power of attorney. If you become incapacitated, the probate court may take over direction of your financial affairs. To prevent this possibility, you can give general durable power of attorney to a trusted person. This representative will be able to handle financial matters on your behalf if you are no longer able to make such decisions.
